A study led by Laura Kabiri, an assistant teaching professor of kinesiology, suggests that mentoring by college students can improve physical activity among elementary school students. The study, which appears in the International Journal of Child and Adolescent Health, is based on a small sampling of charter school students paired with Rice undergraduates and shows statistically significant increases in steps, distance, calories burned and other markers on “intervention” days, though no difference in sedentary time on those days. Co-authors are Rice undergraduates Keegan O’Connor and William Sayre, assistant teaching professors Cassandra Diep and Amanda Perkins-Ball and associate teaching professor Augusto Rodriguez.
